Were you a fan of pizza pops as a kid? Or do you love a good calzone? These mini versions are a great way to make some easy lunches for your kids or make a great snack for game night!
Ingredients
1 1/2 Cups of flour
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp brown sugar
100 ml water, room temperature
50 ml milk
2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil + Extra for brushing on
Calzone Stuffing
Favuzzi Basil Pesto OR Favuzzi Spicy Chili Puree
(NOTE: If using the chili puree, add a heaping tbsp of it to 1/4 Cup tomato sauce)
1 Cup Mozzarella, shredded or cut into a small dice
4-5 thin ham slices, or cut into small cubes
Directions
Combine the flour, baking powder, salt & sugar in a large bowl.
Add the water, milk, and olive oil & combine until a smooth dough ball forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and roll out to a 3-5 mm thickness.
Use a cookie cutter or glass to cut out rounds. Or use a decent sized bowl to make a slightly larger size. Make them according to your preference.
Add the filling, spreading out a layer of the basil pesto or the spicy sauce. Or try both, it's up to you! Leave 2 cm of space on the outer edges. Add the cheese and the ham. Dipping your finger in some warm water, rub the water along the edges, then fold one side of the dough over. Seal the edges well with a fork.
Place the calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving a good distance between them. Brush each one with some EVOO.
Bake in a 400 degree F oven for 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the size you've chosen. Smaller ones will take 15 to 18 minutes. Once golden on the tops, remove and let them cool for a few minutes before enjoying!
